Kate Murphy is de winnaar van de Hanneke Steenbergen Scriptieprijs 2021. Kate kreeg de prijs voor haar scriptie getiteld: ‘FRONTEX AND THE FALLACY OF HUMAN RIGHTS. How could Frontex – the European Border and Coast Guard Agency – operate its management of EU external borders to uphold the Union’s international human rights obligations in the area of migration & asylum?’ Kate Murphy onderzoekt in haar scriptie hoe Frontex in haar functie als bewaker van de buitengrenzen van de EU, omgaat met mensenrechten. Zij doet dit door niet alleen naar het recht te kijken, maar benadert dit actuele thema vanuit een breder institutioneel en sociologisch oogpunt.

De jury, die in 2021 bestond uit mr. Jaap van der Winden, mr. Aldo Kuijer en mr. Mariam Chebti was zeer lovend over de winnende scriptie. Uit het juryrapport: ‘The jury was impressed by this exceptionally good thesis on an important and current issue. Murphy wrote a very clear and comprehensive analysis. The jury is convinced that it will find its way to legal practice and will be useful there.’
